Meet Nick Alexander

Hi all!

For those among you who don’t already know me, I look forward to meeting you when I get back to Middlebury. In the meantime, though, I recognize that you may need some information about my background, past achievements, and work experience.

I’ll start with the basics: I’m a rising senior and a double major in history and political science. For my junior year abroad, I chose to study history and politics at Oxford University. I am originally an Australian citizen, but I spent my formative years in Jakarta, Indonesia, where I attended Jakarta International School. Given the complexity of my background, you can probably understand why when I’m asked about my back-story my friends will just cut in and answer: “He’s from New Jersey.”

I have held a number of leadership roles during my time at Middlebury, but my most significant achievement came in my sophomore year, when a few friends and I won a $10,000 Project for Peace grant from the Kathryn-Wasserman Foundation to found our own non-for-profit organization, called Heal the Rift (HTR). Through HTR, we hope to address increasing polarization between the Muslim World and the West by correcting perspectives that stand in the way of peace and reconciliation. It’s clearly an ambitious task, but we’ve managed to make some headway. You can check out our website at http://www.amar-india.org/htr.

In the past, I have worked for the United Nations, The Permanent Embassy of Afghanistan to the United States, Choose Responsibility, and ‘The Habibie Center’ (an Indonesian think-tank).

First and foremost, however, I consider myself a Middkid. Since my freshman year, I have devoted time and energy to thinking about the ways in which I can contribute to student life at Middlebury to help make it an extraordinary experience for current and future students. It is this that has driven me in the past, and it is this that will continue to motivate me if I am elected.

I hope all of this gives you some sense of who I am and what I’m about. If you have any questions, feel free to email me or add me on Facebook. Otherwise, I hope you all have a great year, and I look forward to meeting you when I get back.

Best,

Nick Alexander
